Andrew Sawyer in his #152 prolite buggy has won the Intense LED Australia contingency prize for round 2 of the 2016 CAMS, PGS Industries WAORC at Carnarvon

Despite a tough event where the wheels literally fell off on prologue and a raid of local Carnarvon vehicles was required to keep the buggy in the event Sawyer finished a creditable 5 out of 6 laps and took home 2nd in Prolite

***Breaking News*** Its April Fools Day

Posted on Updated on

We couldn’t help but have a little bit of fun on April Fools day. Thanks to Russ, Fluffy and everyone that played along and had a good laugh. Its one of the great things about the sport. None of it is true, but the April Fools joke article is below…

Breaking news from the Carnarvon 360 with Russell Cullen excluded from the results after a post race investigation revealed that he had actually run the event with a 6.2L LS3 motor in the #883 GQ Patrol. Cullen who in the past has been referred to as the peoples champ has given us the following statement in regards to the decision

‘I am dissapointed to have let my people down. We knew we had to up the power after we saw Danny ‘chopsticks’ Smith had 500hp at the wheels at Perenjori. I’m just glad Pickers had a DNF so they didn’t check his 8L’

Rumours have also come in that navigator Dan ‘Fluffy’ Fahey will undergo testing after unusually high caffeine levels were found in his system, reportedly due to hair growth tablets

Team Chupa Chup Racing will be holding a press conference at mid day in regards to the disqualification

Doney wins Oricom UHF CB contingency prize

Posted on Updated on

Congratulations to Peter Doney in the #406 Extreme 2wd VW Beetle for winning the Oricom UHF CB contingency prize at Round 2 of the CAMS, PGS Industries WAORC the Carnarvon Motel, Pinjarra Engineering Carnarvon 360

Doney and navigator Richard Wagner showed consistent pace all weekend to take 2nd in the Extreme 2wd class for the weekend and bring themselves into contention for the class title

Title Chase delicately poised after 2 Rounds

Posted on Updated on

The chase for the outright and class titles are delicately poised with the first 2 rounds of the 2016 CAMS, PGS Industries WAORC completed.

Following his thrilling win at the Carnarvon Motel, Pinjarra Engineering Carnarvon 360 Brad Cooper leads Round 1 winner Shane Elphinstone by just 2 points. Sitting in 3rd place outright is thr current WAORC outright champion Brett Smith has been very quick and consistent and sitting only 1 point behind Elphinstone is still lurking as a major threat to the Pro Buggies

In Pro Buggy class by virtue of having more higher placed section times Shane and Curt Elphinstone lead Brad Cooper and Aaron Smithson. Darren Agrela and Ryan Barton sit 3rd in class, but will be hoping for more reliability in the second half of the season

Prolite class is lead by Brett Smith with single seat competitors Wayne Holt, Andrew Sawyer and Bernard Holt trying to chase him down

Nathaniel Edwards leads Super 1650 from Aaron Dark but with only 60 points seperating the pair and 4 round to go ot is still all to play for.

In Extreme 2wd Darryl Hardman in his Desert Sweet Banana truck has a small advantage over Peter Doney but both will be wary of Greg Pickersgill who has been plagued with reliability issues in the first 2 rounds. Another who will be looking to upset the current order is Luke Worthington who missed Carnarvon as he converts his turbo powered truck to a V8 powerplant

Dirk Van Geest leads Ted Schultz and Round 2 winner Chris May in the Production 4wd class with Ben Armstrong and David Turner sitting back in 4th and ready to pounce should they slip up

Extreme 4wd is one of the most competitive fields in the 2016 CAMS, PGS Industries WAORC with Owen and Mitchell Davies leading the way from Russell Cullen and Daniel Fahey. Third place belongs to Leigh Cooper and Jade Armstrong but the points are incredibly tight

There are still 4 rounds left to run and with competitors able to drop their worst round it looks like the 2016 CAMS, PGS Industries Western Australian Off Road Racing Championship in the outright and class titles is going to go down to the wire!!!

Points after 2 rounds are available here

Thrilling finish to Carnarvon 360!!!

The 2016 Carnarvon Motel, Pinjarra Engineering Carnarvon 360 has now been run and won, but the second half of the event has been an absolute thriller. With Agrela leading Elphinstone and Smith at the end of Day 1, the scene was set for a titanic battle during Sundays racing. But first the spirit of the sport was on full display on Saturday as many competitors were helped out by fellow competitors and Carnarvon locals chasing up Turbo 400’s, steering boxes, patrol front diffs and various different parts just to ensure that competitors could get back into the race on Sunday.

Sundays first section turned the running order on its head, with Darren Agrela out early on lap 1. Shane Elphinstone assumed the race lead until they dropped a belt, costing the #44 Pro Buggy over 20 minutes. After getting back on track they put on a massive charge back through the field, slicing past competitors in dusty conditions. Brett Smith lead the field home in the section to lead the event by just under 2 minutes ahead of the final 2 laps of section 3. Brad Cooper was poised to strike in 2nd position, with Brett Renton not far off the pacein 3rd outright. After his DNF yesterday, Andrew Sawyer rocketed through the field for the 4th fastest time of Section 2, with Peter Doney, Ben Armstrong and Leigh Cooper the next best runners.

At the start line of section 3 the race was turned on its head when the outright leading #161 buggy of Brett and Deanna Smith wouldn’t start. They missed their start time and Brad Cooper assumed the lead on track. The Smith Prolite fired up and got back out on track only seconds after Cooper had left the line. Cooper needed to put almost a minutes gap on Smith to take the lead on corrected time. Through lap 1 Cooper had gapped Smith, but Smith still lead on corrected time by 8 seconds. Brad Cooper realizing that he was locked in a massive battle pushed hard on the final lap and managed to take the event win by 6 seconds from Smith in one of the most thrilling nail biting finishes the sport has seen! Brett Renton took out 3rd outright to the delight of the home crowd.

Shane and Curt Elphinstone again pushed hard setting some quick times in the final section to take out 4th outright and valuable points for the championship. Chris May in the 766 Production 4wd put in a massive drive to take out 5th outright and 1st in class. Darryl Hardman just snuck ahead of Peter Doney to win the Extreme 2wd class battle with Dirk Van Geest, Russell Cullen, Gary Kirkwood, Ben Armstrong and Owen Davies the only others to complete all 6 laps

The Class winners were in Pro Buggy Brad Cooper, Prolite Brett Smith, Extreme 2wd Darryl Hardman, Production 4wd Chris May and Extreme 4wd Russell Cullen

The spectacular event has certainly been a great addition to the 2016 CAMS, PGS Industries WAORC and is definitely one to mark down on your calendars for 2017

Day 1 Recap – Carnarvon 360

Posted on Updated on

At the end of Day 1 of the Carnarvon Motel, Pinjarra Engineering Carnarvon 360 the race is incredibly tight. Reconnaissance was not kind to many of the racers, Adam Trewhella broke an axle, Andrew Sawyer lost a wheel, John Flynn had fuel pump issues and Greg Pickersgill had driveline issues. Fortunately all but Pickersgill were able to start the prologue. The 425 trophy truck is being worked on and hopefully will be able to start days 2 racing after missing todays section

Earlier Elphinstone won the prologue 0.73 seconds ahead of Agrela and the 2 have been locked in a dog fight ever since. In section 1 they traded times as Agrela ended section 1’s 2 laps of the Carnarvon course just 14.33 seconds ahead of Elphinstone in the 44 Pro buggy.  3rd position belongs to Brett Smith, with the prolite competitor reveling in the tricky conditions to create a small gap back to Brad Cooper followed by Rob Collings in 5th. Brett Renton is having a solid run, but will have a 4 minute 33 second deficit to the leaders to start on day 2 and will be starting in position 6.

Darryl Hardman is the 1st of the Trophy Trucks, holding the Extreme 2wd class lead as well as 7th outright. Chris May put in one of the drives of the day to land himself in 8th outright and 1st in Production 4wd. Owen Davies leads the Extreme 4wd class, but a damaged rim and subsequent flat tyre has slowed his progress.

There were many hard luck stories throughout the day, Adam Trewhella in the #52 Rimco has lost the clutch and is out of the event whilst Leigh Coopers 814 Pajero had to DNF the section after hitting a culvert at 140km/h and damaging the steering. Ben Armstrong must have felt like he ran over a black cat, with bad luck hampering his run with a flat tyre and busted wheel bearings to come home as the final finisher. John Flynn was another with issues after his fuel pump issues earlier in the day, the Super 1650 was forced out on lap 2 electrical gremlins. Electrical gremlins also struck Peter Barrett, with the car cutting out repeatedly.

Sundays racing will see the competitors tackle 2 sections, each 2 laps of this grueling course. Whilst it has been windy all weekend, the dust is starting to become a major factor.

Successful Scrutineering at Carnarvon

Posted on

Round 2 of the CAMS, PGS Industries WAORC has kicked off at Carnarvon with scrutineering. The field of 23 vehicles filed through Bottlemart, entertaining the Carnarvon locals and giving them a chance to get up close and personal with the competitors and the machinery.

The racing kicks off with prologue on Saturday, followed by Section 1. With the Carnarvon Motel, Pinjarra Engineering Carnarvon 360 also doubling as round 2 of the Tri Series, competitors will be giving it that little bit extra to ensure that are in a good position before round 3 at Kalgoorlie

Last years event winners Brett and Kevin Renton appeared relaxed and ready to defend their crown, whilst Shane Elphinstone, Darren Agrela, Adam Trewhella and Brett Smith as well as a whole heap more look determined not to leave the states north west without some silverware!

Keep your eye out for live results across the weekend available on the series facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/westausorc (subject to Telstra reception at race track)

Carnarvon set to rock this Easter!!!

Posted on

Carnarvon is set to come alive over the Easter Long Weekend with Round 2 of the CAMS, PGS Industries Western Australian Off Road Racing Championship. The Carnarvon Motel, Pinjarra Engineering Carnarvon 360 also couples as round 2 of the WAORC Tri Series where a prize pool of over $2000 is on the line. A small but quality field of competitors are set to make the trek north to Carnarvon and whilst numbers are down from Round 1 at Perenjori the quality most certainly has not dropped. All the sports big hitters have entered with the championship battle for class and outright still most certainly alive

Scrutineering gets underway on Friday afternoon in town at Carnarvon with racing starting on Sunday morning at the track off Bibrawarra Bore Road. In the Pro Buggy class last years event winner Brett Renton will be looking to go back to back whilst Round 1 winner Shane Elphinstone as well as front runners Darren Agrela, Brad Cooper, Adam Trewhella, Rob Collings and more will be looking to take the crown. Pro Lite will be a battle between current WAORC Outright champion Brett Smith in his Southern Cross Race Frames buggy with Andrew Sawyer and Wayne Holt looking to spring a surprise on the reigning champ. John Flynn will be piloting his Super 1650 buggy and don’t be too surprised if he manages to punch above his weight and take out some of the larger capacity buggies

In The Extreme 2wd class Geraldton man Greg Pickersgill will be hoping for a successful return to Carnarvon after claiming a podium finish at the Gascoyne Dash last year. Local Darryl Hardman will be hoping to impress in front of his home crowd whilst Peter Doney will be pushing the Blue Baja Beetle hard against the trucks. Production 4wd again has a solid field with Dirk Van Geest and Ted Schultz set to do battle again. After competing in his Extreme 4wd last event, Chris May will jump into his Production 4wd GQ Nissan Patrol for the Carnarvon 360, with Ben Armstrong and David Michelmore looking to open their WAORC accounts at Carnarvon.

Extreme 4wd again will be a dogfight as Russ Cullen, Leigh Cooper and Owen Davies lock horns again. With Round 1 winner Garry Povah missing from the field Cullen, Cooper and Davies will see this as a good opportunity to bank some points.

Once again Intense LED Australia and Oricom UHF CB will be running their contingency program with competitors going in the draw to win a heap of great prizes just for being a part of the series. Presentations will be held at the Carnarvon Motel on Sunday night, with the event sponsor playing host to what should be a great night
