674 – Chris Unstead from Westvolt Electrical Off Road Race Team has been putting a lot of R&D into getting his Can Am X3 ready for the Mid West Challenge. After showing tremendous pace at the Marsue Transport Bencubbin 400, the #674 was an early DNF. If he can rectify those gremlins dont put it past Unstead to surprise a few of the bigger classes

699 – Ashley Sudholz will be feeling good about his chances of piloting his Polaris to the front of the class after coming up trumps in his last start. The #699 machine is looking strong and ready to go the distance again. Can he make it 2 for 2 in the Polaris vs Can Am battle?

583 – The WA Off Road Junior Development Program has been going from strength to strength in its inaugural year and it may have just unearthed a future star in young Matthew Beck. Beck has handled both events and the challenges they throw up in his stride and as a result of this calm and calculated approach leads the class championship. After 3 of the 6 rounds of the 2017 CAMS Carnarvon Motel WAORC, Prolite competitor Jared Percival holds a slender lead at the top of the outright standings. With the Mid West Challenge, Three Springs and Kalgoorlie rounds remaining there is still a lot of racing to go and this years series is anything but over!

In the class battles Mark Cramer, Harleigh Uren and Marcus Wells are locked in a dogfight for the Pro buggy class lead. Just 148 points separating the leading trio. Percival, Yeardley and Metaxas are the leading trio in Prolite buggy, whilst Daniel Allen has a solid lead in the Super 1650 class. Extreme 2wd looks to be a battle between Colin Doney and reigning champion Greg Pickersgill with a margin back to Hardman and Worthington in the chasing pack. Performance 2wd has unearthed some great young talent this year and WA Off Road Junior Development Program pilot Matt Beck holds a 116 point lead over current class champion Jordan Russell. In Production 4wd Graeme Bentink has his nose in front at the halfway mark, 70 points of the Baxter Racing entry of Steven Baxter. Uren wins Marsue Transport, Bencubbin 400

Day 2 of the Marsue Transport Bencubbin 400 has seen an almighty battle by some of the heavyweights of the sport. With the schedule for the second day of Round 3 of the 2017 CAMS, Carnarvon Motel WAORC seeing the competitors tackle a 75km loop followed by the ‘enduro’ section of the event there was a lot of racing to go

In Sundays first section Nathaniel Edwards set a blistering pace to overhaul overnight leader Harleigh Uren. With just 0.2 seconds splitting the pair over the 75km loop it set up an enthralling finish to the race Brad Krepp was one of the big movers and shakers, finishing the section in 5th outright and 1st Extreme 4wd. Colin Doney in #406 was just one spot further back and lead the Extreme 2wd class. Ashley Sudholz was the only surviving superlite after a broken seal put Chris Unstead out of the event. Jordan Russell stamped his authority on the Performance 2wd battle with Mik French in 2nd place

The final section was shortened to be just 3 laps and 1 x 30 minute service break and tactics would be one of the big talking points of the race. The top 2 had gapped the field and it became apparent that this would be a battle between Uren and Edwards. A sticky throttle meant Edwards had to alter his strategy and take his service after the first lap. Uren seized the opportunity to stay out in clear air and lay down a time good enough to vault him back in front of Edwards on road after he took his compulsory 30 minute stop. Throughout the field there were many different strategies at play as Mark Cramer in his Marsue Transport sponsored Pro Buggy ran 3 continuous laps to be the first competitor to complete all 3 laps. As the corrected times came through it would be Harleigh Uren who would win the 2017 Marsue Transport Bencubbin 400. Nathaniel Edwards, still plagued by a sticky throttle was a valiant 2nd outright and 1st in Prolite. Jared Percival and Mal Yeardley continued their year long battle, with Jared Percival getting the upper hand and 3rd outright ahead of Yeardley by just 39 seconds. Brad Krepp took out the Extreme 4wd class win in 5th outright after battling with Mark Murray who was an unfortunate DNF on the final lap. The Extreme 2wd class result is still provisional as it is under investigation, but Colin Doney was first over the line in his #406 Volkswagen Beetle with Greg Pickersgill a strong 2nd. Ashley Sudholz won the Superlite class in his #699 Polaris whilst Jordan Russell powered his way to a commanding Performance 2wd class victory.

Competitors now look forward to Round 4 of the 2017 CAMS, Carnarvon Motel WAORC to be held at Badgingarra in August. The inaugural event held in this location in 2016 is run by WAORRA and features one of the most technical and demanding circuits of the season. Thanks to series naming rights sponsor Carnarvon Motel, series contingency sponsors Intense LED Australia and Oricom as well as event naming rights sponsor Marsue Transport and all the event supporters including the Shire of Mount Marshall for their assistance with the event

Uren leads Day 1 at Bencubbin

Posted on

Day 1 of the Marsue Transport has been run and won, with Harleigh Uren leading both prologue and section 1 of the event. With clear skys and perfect conditions for racing, a field of 39 competitors after a few late withdrawals took to Bencubbin course for  Round 3 of the 2017 CAMS, Carnarvon Motel WAORC.

Prologue saw an intense battle over 25kms, with Harleigh Uren victorious by 26 seconds. The #77 Pro Buggy headed youngster Stephen Hall in his #181 prolite, with Nathaniel Edwards #161 rounding out the top 3. Colin Doney was the quickest Extreme 2wd, whilst Mark Murray punched in a very competitive time to lead Extreme 4wd in 7th outright. Chris Unstead unleashed the potential in his Westvolt Racing Can Am to sit 10th outright and first in Superlite, whilst John Flynn was the early leader of the Super 1650 field. In Performance 2wd the WA Junior Development Program entry of Matt and Jeremy Beck was quickest in class ahead of Mik French and Jordan Russell

The unique format for the Bencubbin 400 saw the crews head out for another blast around the 25km course for Section 1 of the event. Uren again was quickest, this time blazing his way to a 29 second lead. The top 3 remained the same with Stephen Hall beating Nathaniel Edwards by just 5 seconds to hold second place. Jared Percival was a consistent 4th outright, but behind them the top 4 the mother of all battles is evolving. Mark Murray leads the Extreme 4wd class in 5th outright with John Pursehouse just 2 seconds behind in his Ford Ranger. Paul Tognela is 1 second further back with Extreme 2wd leader Colin Doney and Mal Yeardley 0.1 seconds apart in 8th and 9th place. Ashley Sudholz inherited the Superlite class lead after early leader Chris Unstead did a belt and lost time. Peter Mellington is the only remaining Super 1650 after Flynn and Hawkins dropped out of the running. Jordan Russell charged his way to the Performance 2wd lead with Mathew Beck and Mik French locked in a tight tussle

2 sections totaling 375kms of competitive lays ahead on Day 2 of the event. With such small margins splitting the field the Marsue Transport Bencubbin 400 is living up to its billing as one of the most exciting events on the WAORC calendar. Race results can be found here
